HCi $1000 Free Training Grant

How would you like $1000 to help you develop training materials of your choice? You have until the end of September 2020 to find out – see below for details!

The HCi $1000 Free Training Grant works like this:

If you’re interested in the $1000 (or just in helping other people), then here are the details:

Proposal

You can propose any project you like, but we suggest that it’s something:

  • you really care about
  • that will help other people
  • that people will use

We don’t care about the format, it can be anything from a poster to a PowerPoint deck, to full-on gamified elearning. As long as it’s designed to actually achieve its learning outcomes.

Here are some ideas:

  • materials to help teach literacy and numeracy to adults
  • a set of slides to help teach cultural awareness to kids
  • a boardgame for teaching change management

Remember that your proposal will be voted on, so make sure you put it in language that the average L&D person will understand, and that will appeal to them. Keep your proposal as short as you can. We will only use your contact details for the purposes set out on this page.

You are not limited to working on your own on this, you can include as many people as you like, even organisations (but only non-profit ones).

Voting

When we have enough proposals (we’re aiming for between 5 and 20) we’ll put them up on our web site and use our extensive database of L&D people like yourself to vote on them. We’ll send you a link so you can encourage your colleagues to vote for your project!

Once the votes are in, the proposal with the most votes will get funded. We’ll let all voters know which was the successful project.

Payment

If you win, we’ll get in touch with you and ask you to go ahead. Once you’ve developed the materials and we’ve checked them, we’ll pay you the $1000 (less tax if appropriate).

Licensing

We’ll be publishing the materials using a Creative Commons licence which allows anyone anywhere to use or reuse the material.

Of course, it’s important that any material you include in the work is developed solely by you, and does not infringe the copyright or moral rights of anyone else. In particular, you’ll have to make sure that images and illustrations, and also embedded scripts, are copyright free. We can help with that if you need help.

Publishing

We’ll ensure that the material is widely distributed, and that anyone who might benefit from it can access it easily and for free. We’ll make the material available on our web site, and publish it alongside your name as the original author, and of course you can feature it in your portfolio!

Timing

Here’s the schedule:

  • proposals must be in by 30 Sep 2020, but we reserve the right to limit proposals to the first 20
  • voting will start on 10 Oct 2020 and run for two weeks
  • we’ll inform the winner by 30 Oct 2020
  • once you’ve developed the material, and we’ve checked it, you get paid and the material gets published
